First of all do you want to look like this?

Or this?

Basically do you want to ride something that comfortable or something sporty with speed and handling. It's basically where the pegs are set. Sports bikes are meant to lean through turns while cruisers you'll scratch quite easily. It's all preference really. I wouldn't mind having both but my little wallet can't even afford to buy one so I am using my brother's. One thing to consider is used bikes are best to learn on since you will drop your bike. Like the other day, I dropped mine when I was pulling over on the highway. The stupid shoulder was really dirty and sandy so next thing you know my bike slides and drop my bike. First time ever too. So yeah stupid things happen on a bike which leads to my next point.
Wanna be this guy?

OR this guy?

Do you want to ride with protect or no protection? The answer is you absolutely want to wear protection. Another advise is to take the safety course. It's boring but it'll teach you things that even expert riders forget to do. Always use equipment that's never been involved in an accident. Safety should always be first or you can end up looking like this guy:

So basically there's a lot of freedom when it comes to riding a bike. I think craigslist is great to find bikes. Make sure you're getting a bike that works and in safe shape. Good tires, chain, brakes blah blah. In case you were having hard time finding I even went out of my way for you.

That ninja is basically what have. Mine is 2003 but the difference in bikes is works or doesn't work. Also if you do get a >=600cc sports bike the F versions are usually less sporty making it more comfortable and bit easier to handle and has a extra seat in case one of your dudes feel left out, I mean, in case you need to give a pretty girl a ride. Also sports bikes usually start at 600cc unless you get a ninja.
So in the end, be safe and have fun.

Hey, yeah i just finished the class, and it was fun as hell. I've been looking through craigslist but cant find anything my level. Most stuff on there is like really old/vintage stuff or only 1-3 yrs old.
I was thinking something maybe 5+ yrs old and pre-scratched up so i wont feel too bad about laying it down a few times. I was thinking about the ninja250, but i dont know how long 250cc will keep me entertained. Something along the lines of 600cc may last longer, and I found a decent cbr600 and a gsx600 on craigslist.
I'm waiting until after i get licensed, a helmet/jacket though so i can ride it home. Plus the IRS just ate about 1/2 of my motorcycle fund. Seems to kind of depend on whats on the market when im finally good to buy.
I'd admit 250cc does seem a little small but it's still fast. Can go over 100mph and 0-60 under 6secs. The only thing is the torque is on the high range so you really gotta know how to drive to get the full speed from it. I was told before buying a bike, it's nice to start off with a smaller engine because you get to truly know how to get the full power of the engine. So I dunno, now I wish I had a 600 but it's still adequate and I think it's because I just want a gsxr. Anyways, I have read the cbr is the king of the 600cc bikes in the racing world. Hope this helped you
thanks. i hear the ninja250 is good to start out with cause its like a sports bike, but a lot more forgiving. plus i dont know if i trust myself with a 600cc bike just yet.
i just got my endorsement today, so im good to go. will keep shopping around this week, and hopefully pick something up this weekend.
so you started riding on the highway huh? how is that? last time you came down, you said you never would.
ok so fung linked me to this...i havent read this in so long i didnt even know it was still going...anyway. hi sunny.
im on bikes now too. gas prices are just too crazy. i had an 07 r6 but i sold that for a nifty lil profit and bought an 03 cbr600 f4i and its never been laid. i got it for 4k with 14k miles pretty good deal...new tires, new chain/sprockets...its nice and i love it. i drove a 250cc and you honestly get bored with it quick.
it depends on what youre using the bike for. if its purely for commute the ninja will be just fine for you. if its for fun and kicks then id just step up to the 600 range. its worth the extra grand or so youll spend.
also do not buy an r6 unless its 08 or newer but those cost like almost 10k so i dont think its in yalls price range. if youre going to get used go with cbr. gsxr's are too damn expensive too. they have better resale value though.
honestly the best start bike is a suzuki sv650s...its got enough power, its decent looking (you can buy additional fairings for it to make it look better) and its real easy to steer and control. its the easiest bike ive ever driven.
so i recommend for a starter suzuki sv650s, then the cbr 600f4i, then the cbr rr's, then the gsxr, then the r6. even though i think the r6 looks the best...its poor for performance i think.
I never said never. I said I never would without the right gear. Highway is a lot more calm than the streets. But I guess going 75mph is a lot more dangerous than going 45mph. I'm also bit over-confident and not too fearful of the road. I kinda have to remind myself I'm prone to death when riding. That's why I've decided to get new tires.
yap like the katana and all those sporty touring bikes are good too. All bikes pretty much retain their value after their initial depreciation, only thing that really retain their value is working condition or not. I agree, I am bored of my 250 but I can't say it's not adequate. But I also got it for free so I can't complain. The moral of the story is, get a bike. =)
yeah im going to go look at a '02 gsx750 katana today. friends friend is selling it. he bought it new, and has less than 600mi on it, said asking 2-2.5k which i think is a steal? 750 is kind of intimidating though, and theres no damage on it... i'd hate to ding up a brand new bike.
